Sunday School March 29
We are resuming our Sunday School this Sunday, March 29, 2020. This will be done via ZOOM with ID meeting # 8585769274. We will start the class by 11:45am. Our topic this Sunday is on the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. Come join us. God bless!
In this time of unprecedented king of a challenge, we would like to assure all of our CityLight people (and the whole of CCCRI) that your pastors are ready to receive any prayer items and any needs you might think iur pastors can extend to you. So please do not hesitate to email PNelson at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or call him at 401-390-9955. God bless and stay well.
The parable of the Prodigal Son is found with two other parables – the Lost Sheep (15:1- 7) and the Lost Coin (15:8-10). The parable of the prodigal son is one of the most well- known stories of Jesus. It is more commonly referred to as the story of the prodigal son, though the word prodigal is not found in Scripture. To characterize the son as “lost” emphasizes that sinners are alienated from God; to characterize the son as “prodigal” casts an emphasis on a wayward lifestyle. In truth, this particular parable has many points to bring out concerning the nature of man and God.
The word prodigal may be defined as “rashly or wastefully extravagant”; the son in the story exhibited this behavior with his handling of his share of his father’s estate. Having prematurely gotten hold of his inheritance from the father he “squandered his wealth in wild living” then, “began to be in need.” The natural state of unregenerate mankind is always toward lust and greed and extravagance of all kinds; without God we squander our resources and energies until we are void and empty. When the younger son found himself in this state, he remained in the far country working in a contemptible job and willing to eat the food he was feeding to the pigs which were under his care. When we remain in a place of alienation from God, we descend into futility, darkness, and humiliation.
The parable of the prodigal son indicates, however, that we do have the opportunity to make a change; we do not have to stay in our hopeless state; we can come to ourselves. The lost son realized that in his father’s house there was sustenance for him; he humbled himself, willing, if necessary, to be his father’s servant, and started back home.
Personal Challenge: Is it about time for you to return to God? The lost son in this parable made the resolve to fix his situation. He repented, turned around, and returned home to his father. Can you do the same?
COVID-19 Update 1
Praise be the Lord that we are able to continue to serve, minister, comfort and pray with you amidst this unprecedented threat of COVID-19. It has been two weeks since we moved Sunday worships, fellowship meetings, and prayer meetings to meeting online. We are encouraged by the positive responses, with many more people joining us. Praise be the Lord for his mercy.
As the threat of COVID-19 continues to evolve, it is becoming increasingly unclear when we may be back to our Church to worship and fellowship together. In order that we may continue to minister to our members, the Governing Board has decided on March 11 to postpone our 43rd Anniversary Celebration and 2020 Annual Assembly. The Board has also requested all coworkers and deacons whose term ends March 31, 2020 to continue serving until we are able to hold assemblies to elect new coworkers, deacons and to approve our budget.
During this extraordinary time, our pastors have also planned to administer Holy Communion remotely with self-prepared bread and cups. We shall come together to remember our Lord Jesus through prayers and blessings from our pastors.
Even though our Church has suspended meeting physically, our pastors continue to take turn staffing our church office. You are encouraged to call our pastors for prayers and counseling as always. For our brothers and sisters who may have fallen into financial difficult, we are looking into sharing the burden albeit with limited resources.
By the mercy of our Lord, we pray for COVID-19 pandemic to be over very soon. May the Lord watch over and comfort each and every one.
The Children's Ministry of Lighthouse Kids will connect via Zoom for Children's Church!
